Report: SDNY US Attorney Michael Garcia May Leave to Join Private Practice

By Securities Docket on November 10, 2008, 5:56 am

Michael Garcia, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, may resign his position as early as this week to return to private practice, possibly with law firm Kirkland & Ellis, the WSJ reports.  Possible replacements for Garcia include Lev Dassin, the current No. 2 prosecutor at the SDNY; Mark Pomerantz, a prominent white-collar defense lawyer in New York and a former SDNY prosecutor; and Preet Bharara, a former SDNY prosecutor currently serving as Sen. Chuck Schumer’s chief counsel on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.

The WSJ reports that Mr. Garcia “has been in advanced talks to join the New York office of law firm Kirkland & Ellis.”
