Now that Pres.-elect Obama has formally named Mary Schapiro to head up the SEC, can we just agree on what her title is going to be? With Christopher Cox, it was simple. He was SEC Chairman. But “Chairman” sounds a bit illogical and inaccurate when applied to a woman, so what is the right title here? Chairwoman? Chairperson? Chair?
WSJ, etc. don’t think we haven’t noticed your avoidance of this issue — we’ve been looking for some guidance so we could copy you, to be honest. But so far what we’ve seen are a bunch of end-runs on this like “Regulator Schapiro to Run SEC for Obama,” that state only that she will “lead” or “head” the SEC and be its “chief” with no title offered.
So what is the right title? Can we go with Chairwoman?
If a man is a chairman, why would a woman not be a chairwoman?
I fail to see the issue here…
Too many people worry about political correctness but most of it is ridiculous, merely satisfying jobsworths.
And before anyone says she’s a chair (including her), that’s what one sits on!
who cares what we call her — she’s a good pick and god willing will do a great job!
Let us not get caught up with such trivia- if Chairwoman Schapiro will work to unravel all of the corruption I brought to the attention of Chairman Cox in re the Madoff and Petters multibillion dollar swindles, we ought call her “Madam Hero”
