Carmen M. Ortiz has been recommended to President Obama as the first woman and the first Hispanic US attorney in the state of Massachusetts. The Boston Globe reports that Senators Edward M. Kennedy and John F. Kerry recommended yesterday that President Obama nominate Ortiz to the post.
Ortiz has worked in the US attorney’s office in Massachusetts for the past 12 years, and previously served for about 10 years as a prosecutor in the Middlesex district attorney’s office. In a joint statement, Kennedy and Kerry stated that “We believe that her prosecutorial experience, commitment to public service, and insight into criminal justice issues will make her an exceptional United States attorney.” Ortiz would succeed Michael J. Sullivan, who resigned in April.
