SEC Investigating HCA for Alleged “Phantom Nursing Shifts”

By Securities Docket on October 7, 2009, 11:09 am

SEC230The SEC is reportedly investigating whether Hospital Corporation of America fabricated tens of thousands of payments for phantom nursing shifts.  The focus appears to be on an HCA subsidiary in Londan, the Washington Post reports, and the SEC is coordinating its efforts with investigators at Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs in London.

HCA confirmed Tuesday that it has “received a voluntary request for related information from the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. We have provided requested information and look forward to working with them to conclude this inquiry.” The company added that the allegations under investigation are unfounded.

The Post notes that the SEC probe relates to a dispute now pending in British employment court. A former HCA finance employee alleges that up to 120,000 nursing shifts might have been improperly booked and paid for.
