SEC Tenure: 1999-2015. Dan Hawke was the first chief of the SEC Enforcement Division’s Market Abuse Unit and Director of the SEC’s Philadelphia Regional office. Under Dan’s leadership, the SEC’s Market Abuse Unit developed innovative trading surveillance technology and used quantitative methods to detect abusive trading schemes and conduct groundbreaking “trader-based” investigations. Dan also created the unit’s Analysis and Detection Center to identify potential violations of the federal securities laws, including those involving insider trading, hacking and cybersecurity schemes. Dan left the SEC to become a partner at Arnold & Porter, where he built a strong SEC practice.
You won’t meet many SEC staffers like Dan Hawke. In addition to his illustrious career as an SEC enforcement lawyer, by all accounts, Dan remains the most knowledgeable, conversant and erudite SEC historian of all time — enthusiastically and passionately chronicling SEC history and recording its most important moments. The guy is a walking SEC Wikipedia article — it is just amazing.
